Forged Golf
Clubs or Cast Which One to Choose
Golf clubs can be
manufactured in one of three different ways; they can be cast, forged or a hybrid
that involves using both methods for building individual parts of the head. Each
manufacturer chooses what type of club they are going to manufacture, currently the
most popular golf clubs are forged. Many club makers feel that when you cast a golf
club head you run the risk of air bubbles and impurities in the metal that can affect
the way the club performs. This however depends on the manufacturer and whose opinion
you are willing to listen to.
Forged golf
clubs are made by taking a single billet of iron or steel and
heating up to a red hot temperature that will allow the metal to be shaped or "forged".
Once the metal is hot enough it is placed in a shaping mold, a stamp press then forges
the club into the shape of the mold.

This shape includes any cavities and special pockets that need to be included in the
finished product. Once it cools off the excess of flashing can be trimmed off and the final shape of the edges
ground in.
These newly made forged golf clubs are then given any finishing details such
as groove lines before being finished with paint or chrome and being attached to the shaft as a finished club.
On the other hand a cast club is made by heating the metal to melting point and then pouring it into a mold to
cool, in doing this the grain in the metal is disrupted and flows in all directions in the mold. Many premium
club manufacturers feel that this makes an inferior golf club head, that will not provide the best of
performance.
Titleist forged golf clubs are
among the finest irons in the world, they use 1020 mild carbon steel to build their Z Blend forged golf clubs.
These irons feature blended cavity-to-muscle backs to improve playability. The Z back design evenly distributes
weight from the heel to the toe putting the center of gravity in the center of the face for a good solid feeling
hit.
TaylorMade forged clubs
include the famous Burner with its improved Super Fast Technology that blends progressive COR with MOI and shaft
length to reduce overall club weight while increasing ball speed to gain yardage with every stroke. The progressive
sole width and beveled edges help to reduce bounce and turf resistance to maintain maximum force at the ball with
each shot.
The latest in Callaway forged irons,
the X-Forged series is the result of refinements suggested by Tour players. These Golf clubs are forged from soft
carbon steel to give the head more camber and bounce with a tighter sole radius. The end result is a club that
gives the player an exceptionally soft feel with responsive feedback and one of Titleist’s finest irons.
In the end the choice is up to the individual player as to whether you choose
a cast or forged golf club, some players say you can tell the difference and others will tell you there is none.
Each player must ultimately decide for themselves, by trial and error to see which club works for them and gives
them the best game.
